Inaugurated in 1848, with its terminal station in Matar\u00f3, it traced a clear escape route from the capital towards the Maresme. The development of summer retreats and the fortunes of the indianos* turned the region into an area featuring major landmark works of Catalan Modernism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the route proposes to explore other aspects of this territory: its condition as a periphery and the urbanization of the intermediate spaces between historic town centres through large-scale housing developments; its relationship with nature through different types of interventions and approaches\u2014agricultural, recreational, and infrastructural; and singular facilities, whether in use or repurposed, that speak to the dynamism of an area which, while not metropolitan, enjoys many of its advantages and few of its drawbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><em><strong>* This route is part of the Itineraries program of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 Barcelona.
