A large number of the main civic and religious buildings in the old town, as well as the palatial residences and the most singular buildings of the Eixample, were constructed with Montju\u00efc stone, extracted from the mountain itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern Barcelona has transformed the old quarries in various raw and macabre ways before being repurposed, turning them into parks and memorials, taking advantage of their overwhelming and transcendental scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On other occasions, there have been isolated cases of reusing material extracted from the very ground on which construction is intended, such as Park G\u00fcell or the Montju\u00efc Cemetery, the latter being fascinating for its landscape and poetic dimension over the sea. These are two paradigmatic examples of the qualities brought by working with km0 or supposedly discarded material, prompting us to rethink the way we should build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><em><strong>*This route is part of the Itineraries program of the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 Barcelona.
