According to a widespread clich\u00e9 among local architects, they have left behind their worst works. Being a subjective clich\u00e9, it is debatable: I would say that in half of the cases it is not true and in the rest it is debatable. However, it is a fact that most of the Barcelona commissions were awarded to the architects before they received the prize. Except in the cases of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/ieoh-ming-pei\">I.M. Pei<\/a><\/strong> (awarded in 1983), co-author with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/henry-nichols-cobb\">Cobb<\/a><\/strong> and Freed of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/world-trade-center-barcelona\">World Trade Centre<\/a><\/strong> (WTC), and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/richard-meier\">Richard Meier<\/a><\/strong> (1984), responsible for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/museu-dart-contemporani-de-barcelona\">MACBA<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The route begins precisely with Meier who, invited by Mayor Maragall to begin the architectural regeneration of the Raval, fitted in the neo-rationalist MACBA headquarters. It continues with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/centre-comercial-arenas-de-barcelona\">Las Arenas<\/a><\/strong>, a bullfighting venue with a Mud\u00e9jar fa\u00e7ade that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/richard-rogers\">Richard Rogers<\/a><\/strong> (2007) revamped with futuristic elements. Walking along Gran Via to L&#8217;Hospitalet, you reach the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/ciutat-de-la-justicia\">City of Justice<\/a><\/strong>, nine sober, ochre-coloured blocks by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/david-chipperfield\">David Chipperfield<\/a><\/strong> (2023). Further on, in L&#8217;Hospitalet&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/planejament-i-urbanitzacio-de-la-placa-europa\">Pla\u00e7a d\u2019Europa<\/a><\/strong>, are the works of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/toyo-ito\">Toyo Ito<\/a><\/strong> (2013) and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/rcr-arquitectes\">RCR<\/a><\/strong> (2017): the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/torres-porta-fira\">Fira towers<\/a><\/strong>, particularly the reddish, tree-like one, and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/edifici-olympus\">Olympus building<\/a><\/strong>, with its stepped metal exostructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climbing up Montju\u00efc, we find <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/arata-isozaki\">Arata Isozaki<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/palau-sant-jordi\">Palau Sant Jordi<\/a><\/strong> (2019), and, on the other side of the mountain, in the port area, Pei&#8217;s WTC. Following the coastline, we come to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/frank-gehry\">Frank Gehry<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s gleaming copper <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/el-peix\">Fish<\/a><\/strong> (1989). And a little further on, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/alvaro-siza-vieira\">\u00c1lvaro Siza<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s circular <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/centre-meteorologic-territorial-de-catalunya\">Meteorological Centre<\/a><\/strong> (1992).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still by the sea, at the northern end of Diagonal, is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/herzog--de-meuron\">Herzog &amp; de Meuron<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/edifici-forum\">Forum building<\/a><\/strong> (2001), triangular, blue and self-absorbed, and on Diagonal, next to Gl\u00f2ries, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/jean-nouvel\">Jean Nouvel<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/torre-agbar\">Agbar Tower<\/a><\/strong> (2008). Near the southern end of this avenue stands the reclining skyscraper by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/jose-rafael-moneo-valles\">Rafael Moneo<\/a><\/strong> (1996) and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/manuel-de-solamorales-i-rubio\">Manuel de Sol\u00e0-Morales<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two works on the outskirts of Barcelona bring this itinerary to a close: the slender <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/torre-de-telecomunicacions-de-collserola\">Collserola Tower<\/a><\/strong> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/norman-foster\">Norman Foster<\/a><\/strong> (1999), presiding over the city, and, in Santa Coloma, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/complex-la-pallaresa\">La Pallaresa residential complex<\/a><\/strong> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/eduardo-souto-de-moura\">Eduardo Souto de Moura<\/a><\/strong> (2011).<\/p>\n<div class=\"pld-like-dislike-wrap pld-custom\">\r\n    <div class=\"pld-like-wrap  pld-common-wrap\">\r\n    <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\" class=\"pld-like-trigger pld-like-dislike-trigger  \" title=\"m&#039;agrada\" data-post-id=\"3493\" data-trigger-type=\"like\" data-restriction=\"no\" data-already-liked=\"0\">\r\n                            <img src=\"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/heart-like.png\" alt=\"m&#039;agrada\" \/>\r\n            <\/a>\r\n    <span class=\"pld-like-count-wrap pld-count-wrap\">    <\/span>\r\n<\/div><div class=\"pld-dislike-wrap  pld-common-wrap\">\r\n    <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\" class=\"pld-dislike-trigger pld-like-dislike-trigger  \" title=\"no m&#039;agrada\" data-post-id=\"3493\" data-trigger-type=\"dislike\" data-restriction=\"no\" data-already-liked=\"0\">\r\n                            <img src=\"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/heart-dislike.png\" alt=\"no m&#039;agrada\" \/>\r\n            <\/a>\r\n    <span class=\"pld-dislike-count-wrap pld-count-wrap\"><\/span>\r\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of the forty-seven architectural firms that have received the Pritzker Prize since 1979, fourteen have built in Barcelona.
