{"id":3572,"date":"2024-06-12T09:26:19","date_gmt":"2024-06-12T09:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/rutes\/el-parc-de-la-ciutadella-patrimoni-i-transformacio\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T10:41:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T10:41:15","slug":"el-parc-de-la-ciutadella-patrimoni-i-transformacio","status":"publish","type":"rutes","link":"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/rutes\/el-parc-de-la-ciutadella-patrimoni-i-transformacio\/","title":{"rendered":"The Parc de la Ciutadella, heritage and transformation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cities are the sum of transformations that allow us to read the different layers of their history, and, thanks to architecture, we can understand these transformations as a continuum over time rather than isolated events in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parc de la Ciutadella, originally Barcelona&#8217;s military citadel, was designed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/josep-fontsere-i-mestre\">Josep Fontser\u00e8 i Mestre<\/a><\/strong> on land ceded to the city in 1869 by General Prim. Although the park was inaugurated in 1881, it underwent several modifications when it hosted the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/exposicio-internacional-de-1888\">1888 Universal Exhibition<\/a><\/strong>, directed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/elies-rogent-amat\">Elies Rogent<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 1921, the park has continued to be developed and transformed, notably with the project by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/jeanclaudenicolas-forestier\">Forestier<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/nicolau-maria-rubio-i-tuduri\">Rubi\u00f3 i Tudur\u00ed<\/a><\/strong>, and in the 1980s and 2000s, the construction of the Vila Ol\u00edmpica and a new master plan to turn the Ciutadella into a centre of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several buildings and an extensive collection of public art are currently preserved, which, together with the visible traces of the passage of time, help us to understand some of the most significant changes in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"pld-like-dislike-wrap pld-custom\">\r\n    <div class=\"pld-like-wrap  pld-common-wrap\">\r\n    <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\" class=\"pld-like-trigger pld-like-dislike-trigger  \" title=\"m&#039;agrada\" data-post-id=\"3572\" data-trigger-type=\"like\" data-restriction=\"no\" data-already-liked=\"0\">\r\n                            <img src=\"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/heart-like.png\" alt=\"m&#039;agrada\" \/>\r\n            <\/a>\r\n    <span class=\"pld-like-count-wrap pld-count-wrap\">7    <\/span>\r\n<\/div><div class=\"pld-dislike-wrap  pld-common-wrap\">\r\n    <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\" class=\"pld-dislike-trigger pld-like-dislike-trigger  \" title=\"no m&#039;agrada\" data-post-id=\"3572\" data-trigger-type=\"dislike\" data-restriction=\"no\" data-already-liked=\"0\">\r\n                            <img src=\"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/heart-dislike.png\" alt=\"no m&#039;agrada\" \/>\r\n            <\/a>\r\n    <span class=\"pld-dislike-count-wrap pld-count-wrap\"><\/span>\r\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parc de la Ciutadella, originally Barcelona&#8217;s military citadel, was designed by Josep Fontser\u00e8 i Mestre on land ceded to the city in 1869 by General Prim.
