{"id":3682,"date":"2024-11-20T10:48:34","date_gmt":"2024-11-20T10:48:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/rutes\/arquitectures-del-vi-contemporanies\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T10:56:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T10:56:14","slug":"arquitectures-del-vi-contemporanies","status":"publish","type":"rutes","link":"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/rutes\/arquitectures-del-vi-contemporanies\/","title":{"rendered":"Contemporary Wine Architectures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cathedrals of wine are well known: a group of Catalan Art Nouveau wineries built during the first third of the 20th century, most of them designed by the architect <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/cesar-martinell-i-brunet\">C\u00e8sar Martinell<\/a><\/strong> from Valls; first-rate industrial architecture, cutting-edge at the time, built in small rural towns in the Tarragona region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without wishing to detract from these works, but with a desire to open our eyes to more recent ones, this itinerary offers a contemporary counterpoint to a visit to the \u201ccathedrals\u201d to explore some examples of wine architecture built between the last third of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century in the Priorat and Pened\u00e8s regions. While the wine cathedrals form a coherent whole \u2014as we have said, they are almost all by the same architect and from the same period\u2014 the contemporary wineries we propose are a much more heterogeneous group, both in terms of architects and styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Alt Pened\u00e8s, we mainly find clearly postmodern buildings commissioned by the major contemporary cava producers. We begin in Sant Sadurn\u00ed d&#8217;Anoia, where, opposite the Art Nouveau <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/caves-codorniu\">Codorniu wineries<\/a><\/strong> designed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/josep-puig-i-cadafalch\">Puig i Cadafalch<\/a><\/strong>, are those of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/caves-josep-maria-raventos-i-blanc\">Josep Maria Ravent\u00f3s i Blanc<\/a><\/strong>, designed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/bachmora-arquitectes\">Bach-Mora Arquitectes<\/a><\/strong> in the 1980s. Not far away, in Espiells, we find the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/escola-de-viticultura-i-enologia-merce-rossell-i-domenech\"> Merc\u00e8 Rossell i Dom\u00e8nech School of Viticulture and Oenology<\/a><\/strong>, by the same architects and from the same period; and, in the same town, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/bodegues-juve--camps--finca-despiells\">Espiells winery of Juv\u00e9 &amp; Camps<\/a><\/strong>, another large complex of surprisingly unknown authorship. Closer to Vilafranca are the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/caves-chandon\">Chandon cellars<\/a><\/strong> \u2014now known as \u2018Elyssia by Freixenet\u2019 \u2014by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/carles-diaz-gomez\">Carlos D\u00edaz<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/oscar-tusquets-blanca\">\u00d2scar Tusquets<\/a><\/strong>. And finally, the underground winery of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/bodegues-can-rafols-dels-caus\">Can R\u00e0fols dels Caus<\/a><\/strong>, in Avinyonet del Pened\u00e8s, designed by Italian architect <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/paolo-deganello\">Paolo Deganello<\/a><\/strong> at the beginning of the new millennium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Halfway between the two regions, we can stop in the city of Tarragona to visit the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/facultat-de-quimica-i-enologia-de-la-urv\">URV&#8217;s Faculty of Chemistry and Oenology<\/a><\/strong>, designed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/artigues--sanabria-arquitectes\">Artigues &amp; Sanabria Arquitectes<\/a><\/strong>, and take the opportunity to see other buildings on the same university campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Priorat D.O. region, overlooking the rugged terrain of Priorat, we find the expressionist, industrial-looking roofs of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/caves-mas-igneus\">Mas Igneus winery<\/a><\/strong> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/soldevila-soldevila-soldevila-arquitectes\">Soldevila Soldevila Soldevila Arquitectes<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/celler-ferrerbobet\">Ferrer-Bobet winery<\/a><\/strong> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/espinetubach-arquitectes-i-associats\">Espinet\/Ubach<\/a><\/strong>, both dating from the mid-2000s. Also designed by Miquel Espinet is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/bodegues-i-centre-de-visites-miguel-torres\">Torres al Lloar winery<\/a><\/strong>. And to round off the route, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/celler-clos-pachem\">Clos Pachem winery<\/a><\/strong> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/harquitectes\">H Arquitectes<\/a><\/strong>, a large building grafted into the centre of the village of Gratallops.<\/p>\n<div
