For some, it was an attempt to translate the precepts of French post-structuralism into physical space; for others, it was an attempt to update avant-garde movements such as Dadaism or Russian constructivism. There are also those who interpreted it literally, as synonymous with dismantling or structural imbalance. For all these reasons, it is difficult to define deconstructivism as a unified or coherent movement. Nevertheless, we will outline a route, albeit approximate, that follows the coastline of Barcelona, Sant Adri\u00e0 del Bes\u00f2s and Badalona, areas that were urbanised at the time this style was spreading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The starting point for deconstructivist Barcelona could only be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/frank-gehry\">Gehry<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/el-peix\">Pez<\/a><\/strong>\u2019, the only architect included in the exhibition \u2018Deconstructivist Architecture\u2019 \u2014held at the MoMA in New York in 1988\u2014 who has work in Barcelona. Had it been built, the Fontana Mix would be right next to it. This was the project by Yago Conde and Bea Goller for the Pla\u00e7a dels Voluntaris Ol\u00edmpics, which was intended to pay tribute to the musical score of John Cage&#8217;s work of the same name. Conde worked in the studio of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/peter-eisenman\">Peter Eisenman<\/a><\/strong>, another of the architects included in the aforementioned exhibition at the MoMA. Also under Eisenman&#8217;s tutelage, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/antonio-sanmartin-gabas\">Antonio Sanmart\u00edn<\/a><\/strong>\u2014who, like Conde, worked in his studio\u2014made his deconstructivist imagination felt in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/amplicacio-de-la-biblioteca-can-casacuberta\">Casacuberta library<\/a><\/strong> in Badalona, which he would build years later together with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/elena-canovas-mendez\">Elena C\u00e1novas<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Returning to the Olympic Village, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/pergoles-de-lavinguda-dicaria\">pergolas on Avinguda d\u2019Ic\u00e0ria<\/a><\/strong>, designed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/enric-miralles-i-moya\">Enric Miralles<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/carme-pinos-i-desplat\">Carme Pin\u00f3s<\/a><\/strong>, serve as an irrational counterpoint to the Cartesian ensemble of buildings in the new neighbourhood. The project generated some opposition among the architects of nearby buildings, which led to a rethinking of the original design. This desire for formal confrontation with the environment was also evident in artists linked to deconstruction, such as Robert Smithson, Gordon Matta-Clark and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/placa-de-la-palmera\">Richard Serra<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/ca\/obres\/parc-del-besos\">parc del Bes\u00f2s<\/a><\/strong>, projectat per <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/ca\/autors\/albert-viaplana-i-vea\">Albert Viaplana<\/a><\/strong> i <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/ca\/autors\/heliodoro-pinon-pallares\">Helio Pi\u00f1\u00f3n<\/a><\/strong>, n&#8217;\u00e9s un altre referent. Pi\u00f1\u00f3n va ser un dels primers difusors de Peter Eisenman al pa\u00eds, amb llibres com&nbsp;<em>Arquitectura de las neovanguardias<\/em> o com a editor de la revista&nbsp;<em>Arquitecturas Bis<\/em>. Aquest projecte destaca especialment perqu\u00e8 recull alguns dels debats al voltant de l&#8217;espai p\u00fablic que van tenir lloc a principi dels anys vuitanta arran de concursos com el del parc de la Villette a Par\u00eds. Una de les caracter\u00edstiques principals d&#8217;aquest parc, aix\u00ed com del ve\u00ed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/ca\/obres\/ampliacio-i-intervencions-al-cementiri-de-sant-pere\">cementiri de Sant Pere<\/a><\/strong>, \u00e9s la manera m\u00e9s o menys ir\u00f2nica de relacionar-se amb el context a trav\u00e9s de la introducci\u00f3 d&#8217;elements irracionals, com uns dispensadors d&#8217;aigua grocs o el tra\u00e7 del quadre <em>El naixement del m\u00f3n<\/em> de Joan Mir\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/parc-del-besos\">Bes\u00f2s Park<\/a><\/strong>, designed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/albert-viaplana-i-vea\">Albert Viaplana<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/heliodoro-pinon-pallares\">Helio Pi\u00f1\u00f3n<\/a><\/strong>, is another reference point. Pi\u00f1\u00f3n was one of the first promoters of Peter Eisenman in Spain, with books such as \u2018Arquitectura de las neovanguardias\u2019 (Architecture of the Neo-Avant-Garde) and as editor of the magazine Arquitecturas Bis. This project is particularly noteworthy because it reflects some of the debates on public space that took place in the early 1980s in the wake of competitions such as that for the Parc de la Villette in Paris. One of the main characteristics of this park, as well as the neighbouring Sant Pere cemetery, is the somewhat ironic way in which it relates to its context through the introduction of irrational elements, such as yellow water dispensers or the outline of Joan Mir\u00f3&#8217;s painting \u2018The Birth of the World\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned earlier, one of the characteristics of deconstruction was the interest in pushing structures to their limits. Structural calculation and engineering firms such as BOMA and Esteyco worked with architects to calculate the projects; among these, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/esplanada-forum-2004\">photovoltaic pergola<\/a><\/strong> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/jose-antonio-martinez-lapena\">Jos\u00e9 Antonio Mart\u00ednez Lape\u00f1a<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/elias-torres-tur\">El\u00edas Torres<\/a><\/strong> at the F\u00f2rum stands out.
