Unlike <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/gatcpac\">GATCPAC<\/a><\/strong> \u2014a group that reflected and sought to continue the thread of modernity and avant-garde that began in the 1930s and was cut short by the Spanish Civil War\u2014individualism prevailed in their approaches. Ultimately, what unites them is nothing more than their rejection of the academic civil architecture of the early Francoist regime and their desire to open up to new trends from other Western countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/josep-maria-sostres-i-maluquer\">Josep Maria Sostres<\/a><\/strong> is credited with naming the group. According to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/antoni-de-moragas-i-gallissa\">Antoni de Moragas<\/a><\/strong>, a founding member, \u2018one day he said that the letter R was very appropriate, as it was the first letter of renewal, revolution, restoration, etc., and we adopted the name Grup R.\u2019 To fully understand the context of Sostres&#8217; statement, it is helpful to mention three contemporary buildings from the association&#8217;s founding period because, as mentioned above, they are united more by what they want to differentiate themselves from than by their specific objective: the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/banco-espanol-de-credito\">Banco Espa\u00f1ol de Cr\u00e9dito<\/a><\/strong> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/eusebi-bona-i-puig\">Eusebio Boni<\/a><\/strong> (1950), the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/edifici-social-de-linstitut-nacional-de-previsio\">social building of the Instituto Nacional de Previsi\u00f3n<\/a><\/strong> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/lluis-bonet-i-gari\">Llu\u00eds Bonet<\/a><\/strong> (1954) and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/habitatges-mitre-140146\">many dwellings<\/a><\/strong> designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/francesc-mitjans-miro\"><strong>Francesc Mitjans<\/strong><\/a> during the 1950s, with their thoroughly academic fa\u00e7ades contrasting with unmistakably modern interiors, are good examples for contrasting these contemporary architectures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This selection of works thus presents a stylistic collage that would serve as a potential seed for later schools or approaches in Catalonia, catering to diverse sensibilities. Three objective factors were taken into account when choosing the works: that they were still standing, that the architects had been members of Grup R, and that they had been designed during the association&#8217;s period of activity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pld-like-dislike-wrap pld-custom\">\r\n    <div class=\"pld-like-wrap  pld-common-wrap\">\r\n    <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\" class=\"pld-like-trigger pld-like-dislike-trigger  \" title=\"m&#039;agrada\" data-post-id=\"3714\" data-trigger-type=\"like\" data-restriction=\"no\" data-already-liked=\"0\">\r\n                            <img src=\"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/heart-like.png\" alt=\"m&#039;agrada\" \/>\r\n            <\/a>\r\n    <span class=\"pld-like-count-wrap
