These facilities responded to new programmes such as the chemical, food-processing, electronics and automotive industries, all of which required large, open-plan, well-lit and well-ventilated spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This need for new industrial spaces, combined with the inconvenience posed by small- and medium-sized industries located within Barcelona\u2019s urban fabric, led in 1953 to the development of the Barcelona Planning Scheme and its area of influence. This plan linked demographic growth with the implantation of new industry in order to avoid long journeys for workers, and promoted the creation of new industrial areas such as the Zona Franca. Here, industrial complexes such as SEAT\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/filial-exposicio-i-torre-doficines-seat\">Barcelona subsidiary<\/a><\/strong>, its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/escola-daprenents-i-oficines-taller-de-fundicio-de-la-fabrica-dautomobils-seat\">apprentice school and offices<\/a><\/strong> were eventually located, as well as a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/ampliaco-de-la-fabrica-lampades-electriques-z\">new factory for L\u00e1mparas Electr\u00f3nica Z \/ Phillips<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/edifici-comercial-pirelli\">the Pirelli commercial building<\/a><\/strong> and the factory for Electr\u00f3nica Precisi\u00f3n, the latter two now disappeared. New residential developments were also built, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/conjunt-dhabitatges-per-als-treballadors-de-la-seat\">including housing for SEAT workers<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/conjunt-dhabitatges-estrelles-altes\">Estrellas Altas housing<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/conjunt-de-168-habitatges-a-la-gran-via\">168 dwellings on Gran Via.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Zona Franca Promenade developed hand in hand with the new factories, but also with the workers who walked along it day after day in search of a better life.
