{"id":3804,"date":"2025-02-17T09:41:56","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T09:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/rutes\/la-barcelona-de-lluis-domenech-i-montaner-realitat-i-somni\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T10:59:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T10:59:13","slug":"la-barcelona-de-lluis-domenech-i-montaner-realitat-i-somni","status":"publish","type":"rutes","link":"https:\/\/editorial.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/rutes\/la-barcelona-de-lluis-domenech-i-montaner-realitat-i-somni\/","title":{"rendered":"The Barcelona of Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner: reality and dream"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mark left on Barcelona by the architecture of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/lluis-domenech-i-montaner\">Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech i Montaner<\/a><\/strong> is significant, not so much for the quantity as for the quality of certain buildings such as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/editorial-montaner-i-simon\">Montaner i Sim\u00f3n publishing house<\/a><\/strong>, now the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/reforma-de-la-fundacio-antoni-tapies\">T\u00e0pies Foundation<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/caferestaurant-de-lexposicio-internacional-de-1888\">Caf\u00e9-Restaurant at the 1888 Universal Exhibition<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/palau-de-la-musica-catalana\">Palau de la M\u00fasica Catalana<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/casa-lleo-morera\">Casa Lle\u00f3 Morera<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/casa-fuster\">Casa Fuster<\/a><\/strong>, and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/hospital-de-la-santa-creu-i-sant-pau\">Hospital de Sant Pau<\/a><\/strong>. But beyond these works, Dom\u00e8nech designed some buildings and urban projects that were either never built or have since disappeared. This route will take you through some of Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech&#8217;s works and relate them to some of his lost works and the projects he dreamed of for Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exhibition, Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech built the Caf\u00e9-Restaurant, as well as the short-lived <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/gran-hotel-internacional\">Gran Hotel Internacional<\/a><\/strong>, which was demolished once the event was over. After this milestone, Dom\u00e8nech worked on proposals for the International Exhibition of Electrical Industries in 1915 and 1917. In 1915, he designed a composition that took advantage of part of the 1888 site and extended towards the Bes\u00f2s River, but this failed, and in 1917 he designed a new one on Montju\u00efc Mountain. However, once again, Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech&#8217;s design, this time with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/manuel-vega-i-march\">Manuel Vega i March<\/a><\/strong>, was not carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the way to the old town, passing through the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/arc-de-triomf\">Arc de Triomf<\/a><\/strong> \u2014designed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/authors\/josep-vilaseca-i-casanovas\">Josep Vilaseca<\/a><\/strong>, Dom\u00e8nech&#8217;s partner at the time, also designed as part of the Universal Exhibition\u2014 at the intersection of Carrer d&#8217;Ausi\u00e0s Marc and Carrer del Bruc, the Provincial Institutions complex was to be built. Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech and Josep Vilaseca, then young architects, won the competition organised in 1877 by the Barcelona Provincial Council for what was a large plot of land on the border between the Eixample and the historic city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From here we could pass by the Palau de la M\u00fasica Catalana, a building which, beyond its architectural quality, is linked to Llu\u00eds Dom\u00e8nech&#8217;s work in 1914 to connect the lower part of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/modificacio-del-pla-baixeras-per-lobertura-de-la-via-laietana\">Gran Via Laietana<\/a><\/strong> with the old streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arriving at Carrer del Parad\u00eds, at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/reforma-per-a-la-seu-del-centre-excursionista-de-catalunya\">headquarters of the Catalan Excursionist Centre<\/a><\/strong>, we can see Dom\u00e8nech&#8217;s work from 1903 and 1905 to expose the remains of the Roman temple of Augustus. In this setting, Dom\u00e8nech dreamed of an Agora, which he described in his 1879 article \u2018Reforma de Barcelona\u2019 (Reform of Barcelona), a monumental square where the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/pont-del-bisbe-del-palau-de-la-generalitat\">Palace of the Generalitat<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/facana-principal-i-cimbori-de-la-catedral-de-barcelona\">cathedral<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arquitecturacatalana.cat\/en\/works\/restauracio-del-salo-del-tinell\">Royal Palace<\/a><\/strong> and the columns of the Roman temple would be displayed. We would then continue with the 1905 project for the Gran Via de Pedro el Grande, of which the current Avinguda de la Catedral would be a part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This tour could end at Casa Fuster, contemplating an image of the slender corner tower that was never built.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pld-like-dislike-wrap pld-custom\">\r\n    <div class=\"pld-like-wrap
