This itinerary starts at the Llobregat River as a natural axis and the environmental restoration project of its course to turn it into one of the main green corridors of the Metropolitan Area. The route explores contemporary projects that are restoring the architectural heritage of different municipalities along the lower section of the river. The buildings and spaces it covers date from various periods, from Roman and medieval times to the industrial revolution and art Nouveau, highlighting the richness of the area’s recent and distant past. At the same time, they remind us that the intense development of the city of Barcelona over the last 250 years as a major Mediterranean capital is closely linked to this natural and working-class ‘rear guard’. The buildings are currently used for public, cultural or administrative purposes and are generally open to visitors, often free of charge.
